Host Family Respite

Host Family Respite Care is a respite service for people with a disability and their carers. The term “respite care” means relief care or time out. Host Family Respite Care offers a break for families that care for a person who has a disability.

Host Family Respite Care’s other important function is that it seeks to develop the person with a disability’s independence and social network by spending time with the host family.

Our Hosts

They are people from the community who come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences and have been orientated to become caregivers. Considerable care is taken by the Service’s Co-ordinator to recommend which caregiver would be most suitable for each family.

The Co-ordinator arranges a meeting between the caregiver and the family to enable them to become acquainted and discuss aspects of care such as support required, personal care, supervision, medication, etc. The person with a disability is then gradually introduced to the caregiver’s family, perhaps with an initial stay of just a few hours before care becomes a regular arrangement.
